Matsuba, Richmond

The site used to be a small Russian restaurant located in the narrow retail parade of Red Lion Street in Richmond. We were asked by new owner to transform cramped and cluttered interior space into a minimal and contemporary Japanese restaurant.

The main issue of design was to overcoming an awkward triangular shape of footprint of the site. In order to achieve the goal, we created the series of stepped wall with lighting slots to the front and these walls define and create independent seating areas. The counter and sushi bar are integrated within the 5 metres long rectangular box to maximise the use of small space.
